Chapter 17 - The Iron Vault

|

The estate was chaotic, filled with the harsh smell of gunpowder and the frantic movements of a cleanup crew making bodies disappear before the police were ever called.

Dante didn't stay to oversee the scrubbing of the ballroom. He left Silvio in charge of the mess and walked swiftly down the long, dimly lit stairs into the sub-basement. His heart, which had been perfectly calm during a gunfight, was now beating frantically against his ribs.

He reached the heavy, reinforced steel door of the old pantry bunker.

He knocked three times, paused, and knocked twice.

He heard the heavy scraping of a deadbolt sliding back. The steel door slowly creaked open.

Elena stood in the doorway. She was pale, terrified, clutching a heavy iron meat tenderizer like a weapon. When she saw it was Dante, standing there in his blood-spattered tuxedo, unharmed, she dropped the iron mallet with a loud clatter.

"Mr. Moretti," Elena breathed out, tears springing to her eyes, her entire body shaking with relief. "Is it over?"

"It is completely over, Elena," Dante said softly, stepping into the bunker. "The threat is eliminated. The Bratva is dead. You are safe."

Behind Elena, curled up on a pile of thick blankets, was little Sophia. She was fast asleep, completely oblivious to the massacre that had just occurred above her, her tiny hands still clutching the gray stuffed cat with the bent ear.

Dante walked over and knelt beside the sleeping child. He looked at the little girl who had boldly tugged on his sleeve and saved his life, his empire, and his soul. He gently brushed a stray dark curl from her forehead.

"She is a very brave little girl," Dante whispered.

Elena wiped her eyes, wrapping her arms around her chest. "She doesn't understand what she did, sir. She just knows when bad people are nearby."

"She understands more than most adults," Dante noted, standing back up. He turned to face the cook. He looked at her flour-stained apron, her tired eyes, and the fierce, protective fire that burned within her.

"Elena," Dante said, his voice dropping to a low, intimate register. "Tomorrow morning, you are no longer the cook of this estate."

Elena gasped, fresh panic seizing her features. "Please, Mr. Moretti, I didn't mean to pry, I swear—I need this job to support her—"

"You are not fired," Dante interrupted gently, closing the distance between them and raising a large hand to calm her. "You are elevated."
