Chapter 19 - The New Queen

|
Six months later, the brutal New Jersey winter had melted into a bright, blooming spring.
The Moretti estate was completely transformed. The heavy, oppressive silence of the mansion was gone, replaced by the chaotic, joyful sounds of a child running through the halls. The bullet holes in the ballroom had been plastered over, and the dark legacy of the mafia was slowly being scrubbed clean by aggressive corporate acquisitions.
Elena sat at the massive mahogany desk in Dante's study, wearing a tailored navy pantsuit instead of a stained apron. She was reviewing the quarterly financial reports for the newly established Moretti Charitable Foundation, a massive philanthropic endeavor funded entirely by clean, legitimate money.
She was no longer the cook. She was the Donna. And the men who worked for Dante had learned to respect her quiet, ruthless intelligence just as much as his violence.
The heavy doors of the study opened.
Dante walked in, removing his suit jacket and rolling up his sleeves. He looked relaxed, the dark shadows under his eyes completely gone. He walked behind her chair, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss against the bare skin of her neck.
"Silvio just closed the deal on the port authority," Dante murmured, resting his hands on her shoulders. "We are eighty percent legitimate. In another year, the syndicate will be nothing but a corporate holding company."
"You did it," Elena smiled, leaning back against him, feeling the solid, comforting weight of his presence. "You actually did it."
"We did it," Dante corrected softly. He reached into his pocket and placed a small, velvet box on the desk, right on top of the financial reports.
Elena’s breath hitched. She looked at the box, then up at him.
"I had a wedding a few months ago," Dante said, his dark eyes burning with absolute devotion. "But I never had a marriage. I want to do it right this time. No hidden agendas. No assassins in the ballroom. Just you, me, and Sophia."
Elena opened the box. Inside rested a stunning, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring, elegant and perfectly understated, chosen specifically for her.
Tears of pure joy sprang to her eyes. She stood up, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes. Absolutely, yes."

Dante caught her, lifting her off her feet, spinning her around the study as she laughed, a sound that brought light into the darkest corners of his world.
But in the mafia, peace is always a fragile, temporary illusion.
