Chapter 18 - The Confession

|

Elena stared at him, utterly confused, her breath catching in her throat as he stepped dangerously close.

"I don't understand," she whispered.

"I spent a year looking for loyalty in a woman who was paid to destroy me," Dante said, his dark eyes searching her face with an intensity that made her knees weak. "And all the while, absolute loyalty was standing in my kitchen, burning meals because she was too worried about her daughter."

He reached out, his rough, scarred fingers gently brushing against her flour-dusted cheek. The contact sent a jolt of pure electricity straight to Elena's core.

"You and your daughter saved my life today, Elena," Dante murmured, his voice thick with raw, unguarded emotion. "I owe you a debt I can never repay. But I want to try."

"Sir, you don't owe us anything," Elena argued weakly, mesmerized by his touch. "You protected us. You put guards on my door."

"I protected what is mine," Dante stated fiercely, his thumb tracing her jawline. "I didn't just want to keep you alive, Elena. I realized I want to keep you. Period."

The confession hung in the cold air of the bunker, heavy and profound. The most dangerous mafia boss on the East Coast was entirely surrendering to a single mother who made his pasta.

"Dante," Elena breathed, using his first name for the very first time. "My life is small. Yours is... violent. I can't expose Sophia to this world permanently."

"I will build a wall of fire around you both," Dante vowed, pulling her flush against his chest. "I will wash the blood from my hands. I will legitimize every business I own. I will give Sophia the world, and I will give you my soul. Just don't ask me to let you go."

Elena looked up into his dark, desperate eyes. She saw the monster the world feared, but she also saw the fiercely protective man who had knelt on the floor to give her daughter a chocolate.

She didn't run. She reached up, tangling her fingers in his dark hair, and pulled his face down to hers.

The kiss was explosive, desperate, and fueled by hours of terrifying tension. Dante groaned, wrapping his powerful arms around her waist, lifting her slightly off the floor, kissing her as if she were the only oxygen left in a burning building.

When they finally broke apart, both breathing heavily, a soft, sleepy voice interrupted them.

"Uncle Dante," Sophia mumbled from the blankets, rubbing her eyes. "Did the bad lady go away?"

Dante smiled, a true, genuine smile that transformed his hardened face. "Yes, little one. The bad lady is gone forever."
