Chapter 2 - The Bronze Seal

|
When the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind the terrified cook and her child, the silence in the study became absolute. Dante did not immediately move. He sat in the leather chair, listening to the rain beat against the reinforced glass, letting the weight of a three-year-old’s words settle into his bones.
He stood up, his six-foot-two frame casting a long, imposing shadow across the Persian rug. He walked past the oil portrait of his father and approached the far wall, lined with century-old books. He reached for a specific, worn volume of Dante Alighieri’s Inferno and pulled it forward.
A quiet mechanical click echoed behind the mahogany paneling. A small, concealed drawer slid open silently.
Only two living men knew this drawer existed. Dante, and his consigliere, Silvio.
Inside the drawer sat a heavy bronze seal bearing the Moretti family crest. Beneath it lay a master ledger—an encrypted hard drive containing the routing numbers for over four billion dollars in offshore syndicate accounts. It was the lifeblood of the five eastern families.
Dante leaned in closely.
The bronze seal was sitting exactly three millimeters to the left of the faint dust outline where it had rested that morning.
Someone had touched it. Someone had moved the seal to photograph or clone the encrypted drive beneath it.
A shiny key. From the dark wood box.
His fiancée, Victoria.
Dante closed the drawer. His heart did not race. His hands did not shake. The absolute, terrifying calm that had earned him the title of 'Boss of Bosses' washed over him like ice water.
Victoria Thorne was the daughter of a prominent state senator. She was elegant, sophisticated, and supposedly innocent of the underworld's grime. They were scheduled to be married in exactly four days, a union meant to legitimize the Moretti empire in the eyes of the political elite.

Instead, she was a viper operating inside his own house. She hadn't fallen in love with him. She had spent a year playing the perfect, loving partner, waiting for the moment he trusted her enough to let her into the west wing.
Dante picked up the ruined shipping contract and fed it into the paper shredder. The wedding would proceed. But Victoria would not be walking down the aisle to a marriage. She was walking to her execution.
