Chapter 7 - The Birth of Hope

On a crisp, sunny morning in April, three months after that fateful New Year's Eve, I gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl at Boulder Community Hospital.
I named her Hope.
She was born with a thick crown of dark curls and bright, curious hazel eyes. When the nurse placed her warm, fragile body against my chest, tears of profound, overwhelming joy streamed down my cheeks.
I looked down at the faint, silver-white circular scar on the lower right curve of my stomach—the mark left by Grant’s cigarette.
That scar was no longer a wound. It was a badge of honor, a permanent reminder of the moment a mother’s fierce love rose up to destroy a dynasty of predators and protect her child from harm.
Arthur Vance and Detective Sarah Jenkins visited the hospital room that afternoon, bringing large bouquets of yellow sunflowers and stuffed plush animals.
"She has your eyes, Claire," Sarah smiled, gently touching baby Hope’s tiny hand.
"And she has her mother's unbreakable spirit," Arthur added warmly, handing me the final divorce decree signed by the Chief Family Court Judge.

Under the court order, Ryan’s parental rights had been completely and permanently terminated due to felony violence and attempted child endangerment. Hope was legally, fully, and unconditionally mine.
We were safe. We were free.
