Chapter 3 - The Forensic Paper Trail

By 6:00 AM on New Year's Day, the fetal monitor confirmed that my daughter’s heart rate was strong, stable, and completely unharmed by the physical trauma.
Arthur Vance arrived at my private hospital suite carrying two heavy, red-stamped corporate ledgers and a secure encrypted tablet. Arthur had managed my late father’s estate and my private equity portfolio for over a decade.
"Claire, look at this," Arthur said, opening the tablet to display a web of banking transactions.
"What am I looking at, Arthur?" I asked, adjusting the hospital bed.
"When you married Ryan three years ago, you added him as a secondary signatory on your discretionary household management account," Arthur explained, pointing to dozens of unauthorized wire transfers. "Over the past eighteen months, Ryan forged your digital signature on seven separate corporate promissory notes, using your cloud-security stock options as collateral to secure a 4.2-million-dollar commercial loan for Grant’s shell company, Apex Global Logistics."
"Apex Global?" I gasped. "Grant told me that company was funded by his private investors!"
"There were no investors, Claire," Arthur replied with a grim, razor-sharp smile. "Grant and Ryan used your money to lease luxury sports cars, pay off Grant’s offshore gambling debts in Macau, and finance Brooke’s luxury fashion boutique in Cherry Creek. And yesterday morning, Apex Global defaulted on its first quarterly bond payment."
"They were trying to force me to sign over the penthouse deed to cover the bank default," I realized, the horrifying puzzle pieces snapping together.
"Exactly," Arthur confirmed. "If you had signed the property quitclaim yesterday, the bank would have seized your penthouse to pay off Grant's debt. When you refused, Grant lost his temper and attacked you."
"Where are they now?"
"Grant and Ryan are currently sitting in the Denver County holding facility after building security handed over the video footage at 2:00 AM," Arthur said. "Bail has not been set."

I looked at the blistered burn mark on my stomach, then took the digital pen from Arthur’s hand.
"Execute every default clause, Arthur," I said with cold, unyielding resolve. "Evict Diane and Brooke from the penthouse by noon, seize all assets tied to Apex Global, and notify the District Attorney's financial crimes division."
