Chapter 5 - The Arraignment in Chains

Three days later, the criminal courtroom at the Denver City and County Building was packed with reporters, corporate colleagues, and legal observers.
Judge Eleanor Vance presided from the bench.
Ryan and Grant were led into the courtroom through the secure holding door, dressed in orange inmate jumpsuits with heavy steel chains connecting their wrists to their waists. Grant’s silver hair was messy, his arrogance replaced by a hollow, terrified tremor. Ryan kept his head down, refusing to look at the gallery.
Sitting in the front row of the prosecution gallery, I wore a high-collared cream wool coat, looking composed, regal, and completely untouched by their cruelty. Beside me sat Detective Sarah Jenkins and Arthur Vance.
The prosecutor stepped to the podium. "Your Honor, the state presents formal charges against Grant Bennett: Aggravated Felony Assault with a Weapon, Felony Battery on a Pregnant Victim, and Witness Tampering. Against Ryan Bennett: Aiding and Abetting Aggravated Assault, Felony False Imprisonment, and Seven Counts of Grand Larceny and Wire Fraud."
Grant’s defense attorney stood up frantically: "Your Honor! My clients are respected community businessmen! The incident was a tragic domestic misunderstanding fueled by holiday alcohol. We request reasonable bail so they can prepare their defense."
"A misunderstanding, Counsel?" Judge Vance asked, her voice dripping with ice.
Judge Vance pressed a button on her bench terminal.
The courtroom monitors illuminated with the high-definition security footage from the penthouse terrace.
The audio was horrifyingly clear:
Grant: "This is what happens when an arrogant wife forgets who runs this household." The screen showed Grant pressing the glowing cigarette into my pregnant belly. The screen showed Ryan holding my wrists down while I screamed in agony.
Gasps of pure disgust erupted from the gallery. Two court reporters shook their heads in revulsion.
Judge Vance leaned forward, her knuckles white around her gavel.
"In twenty-eight years on this bench, I have rarely seen an act of such depraved, cowardly brutality," Judge Vance declared. "Bail is denied for both defendants. They will remain in maximum-security custody pending trial."
The heavy gavel slammed down with an explosive crack.

As the bailiffs dragged Grant and Ryan toward the holding cells, Ryan looked across the aisle, his eyes meeting mine in desperate, weeping terror.
I did not flinch. I did not shed a single tear. I watched him disappear behind the steel door, knowing that the chains he wore were forged entirely by his own greed.
