Chapter 2 - The Deed of 4200

I walked into the master suite, packed my emergency duffel bag with personal documents, medications, and clothes, and stepped into the elevator vestibule.
Ryan chased after me, his face pale, frantically trying to block the elevator doors.
"Claire, wait!" Ryan pleaded, his arrogance vanishing into sheer panic. "Don't call the police. It was an accident! Dad was just trying to make a point... we were all drinking! Think about our family! Think about my promotion!"
"Step out of my elevator, Ryan," I commanded.
"Claire, please—if the police get involved, it'll ruin everything!"
For the first time that night, the fear in his voice wasn't about our marriage; it was about exposure.
The elevator doors slid shut.
Downstairs in the private lobby, I showed the burn mark to the head concierge, Marcus.
"Marcus," I said calmly. "Call 911 immediately. And preserve every second of internal video footage from Penthouse 42B for the past four hours. Do not allow anyone to tamper with the server."
"Right away, Mrs. Bennett," Marcus replied, his eyes widening in horror at the blister on my abdomen as he picked up the emergency line.
Fifteen minutes later, the wail of sirens cut through the snowy Denver night. Paramedics wrapped sterile cooling burn gel over my stomach and rushed me to Denver Health Medical Center.
While the trauma obstetricians attached fetal heart monitors to track my baby, Detective Sarah Jenkins from the Special Victims Unit sat beside my hospital bed, taking digital photographs of the circular third-degree burn and the bruises encircling my wrists.
"The building security manager just transferred the cloud footage to our precinct server, Claire," Detective Jenkins said gently. "The video captures the entire assault with clear audio. We have your father-in-law on aggravated felony battery with a deadly weapon, and your husband on felony domestic restraint."
As fireworks exploded across the dark sky outside the hospital window, my phone buzzed with an urgent message from my longtime corporate attorney, Arthur Vance:
“Claire, do not speak to Ryan or Grant under any circumstances. I just ran a forensic audit on your private trust accounts. We found something massive. Ryan has been running an offshore embezzlement scheme using your signature. Meet me at dawn.”

I stared at the screen, tears drying on my cheeks.
The cigarette burn was only the tip of an iceberg that was about to sink the entire Bennett family into the abyss.
