Chapter 9 - THE ACCUSATION

The next morning brought a visitor. Celeste.
She swept into the penthouse as if nothing had changed—elegant, cold, radiating the same entitlement I had once mistaken for grace. She looked around the room, nose wrinkling faintly at the scattered toys and children’s drawings.
“Adrian. We need to talk.”
I stood between her and the nursery door. “There is nothing left to say. Vivian is dead. The wedding is over. Leave.”
Celeste ignored me and stepped closer, voice dropping. “I know you found out. About Rose.”
My heart skipped. “How do you know about Rose?”
“Because my brother knew,” she said, and for the first time her composure cracked. “Julian. He… he forced himself on Clara the night before she left the city. He told me months later. I made him swear to say nothing. Vivian found out somehow. She threatened to expose us. To ruin everything.”
Horror washed over me. Julian. Celeste’s brother. Rose’s father. He had assaulted Clara. Conceived Rose in violence. And the Harringtons had buried it all. Paid Vivian to silence. Protected their monster while Clara suffered.
“And Clara withdrew the report because you threatened her?” I asked, voice low.
Celeste stiffened. “We offered her money. Security. A home. We wanted to make things right. She refused. Said she would tell you. So we… encouraged her to stay quiet until things could be sorted out.”
“Encouraged her?” I stepped forward, enraged. “You let her die. Sick. Without medicine. Without care. Because exposing the truth would embarrass your family.”
Celeste paled. “Vivian acted alone. She said she was protecting us. Protecting the family name. I never wanted Clara to die.”
“Then why come here now?”
“Because Julian wants his daughter,” Celeste said, voice steady despite everything. “He knows Rose is alive. And he has lawyers. Adrian… he will fight you for custody. And with his resources… he could win.”
I stared at her, stunned. They had destroyed Clara. Nearly destroyed the girls. And now they wanted Rose? As if she were property to be claimed?
“Over my dead body,” I said.
Celeste’s eyes filled with angry tears. “I am telling you this because it is the truth. Julian is ruthless. He will use the DNA. He will say you kidnapped her. That you have no legal right. And he will destroy Lily too. He will say she is unstable. Traumatized. Not a safe sister for Rose.”
Lily. They would drag Lily through the mud. Use her trauma against her. To steal her sister.
Celeste stepped closer. “Let me take Rose. I will keep her safe. Raise her as my own. Julian will never touch her. And I will protect Lily too. It is the only way.”
“Hand my daughter over to the same family that destroyed her mother?” I shook my head. “Leave. Before I call the police and tell them everything. Julian’s crime. Vivian’s crimes. All of it.”
Celeste went pale. “You do that… and the scandal will ruin you too. Lily will suffer. Rose will suffer. The media will tear them apart. Think carefully, Adrian. Sometimes silence is the only kindness.”
She turned and walked out. Leaving me shaking with rage. They thought silence was kindness. But silence was what had allowed them to hurt Clara in the first place.
That evening, I sat with Lily and told her as much as she could understand. That Rose’s real father was a dangerous man. That he might try to take her away.
Lily listened quietly, face solemn. When I finished, she took my hand.
“Let him try,” she said fiercely. “I already lost Mommy. I won’t lose Rose too. And I won’t let him hurt you either.”
I pulled her close. “We will fight him. Every step. Every day. And we will win. Because we have something he does not.”
Lily looked up. “What?”
“Love. And truth.”

But as I spoke, a dark shadow fell across the doorway. Hale stood there, face pale.
“Adrian… Julian’s lawyers just filed emergency paperwork. They have the DNA results. A judge signed an order. He is coming here tomorrow. To take Rose.”
