Chapter 8 - THE REVELATION

The results arrived ten days later. I opened the envelope alone in my study.
Lily: 99.99% probability of paternity. My daughter. Beyond doubt.
Rose: 0%.
The words blurred. I read them again. And again. Rose was not mine. She was not my daughter.
My mind reeled. Clara had been faithful. I knew that. We had been happy. She would never have betrayed me. Unless… unless something had happened while I was gone. Unless someone had hurt her. Unless Rose was the product of violence.
Vivian’s letter made sudden, terrible sense. Look at Rose. Study her bloodline. She had known. She had known Rose’s real father. And she had died protecting that name.
I sat there for hours. Staring at the paper. Rose was not my blood. But she was my heart. I had held her. Fed her. Cradled her through fever. She called me Daddy in her baby babble. Biology changed nothing. I would raise her as my own. Love her as fiercely. Protect her as bravely.
But I had to know the truth. Who was her father? And did that person know she existed? Did they want her?
Footsteps approached the door. Lily stood there, holding a drawing. She looked at my face, then at the paper in my hand.
“Is it bad news?” she asked quietly.
I folded it quickly. “No. Not exactly.”
She walked closer. “It’s about Rose, isn’t it?”
I looked at her in shock. “How did you know?”
Lily twisted her fingers together. “Mommy said… said Rose was special. That she came from something bad. That we had to keep her safe. And that Daddy might not be her real daddy. But that you would love her anyway.”
Clara had known. She had prepared Lily. She had trusted me to love Rose no matter what.
My throat tightened. “And what do you think, Lily?”
Lily looked up, eyes bright and fierce. “I think you ARE her daddy. Because you stayed. Real daddies are the ones who stay. Not the ones who made them.”
Tears spilled over. I pulled Lily into my arms and held her tight. “Thank you. For trusting me. For teaching me what really matters.”
“Does this mean someone might try to take Rose away?” Lily asked, voice small but brave.
I stroked her hair. “Not if I can help it. Never. I will fight anyone who tries. Anyone.”
But as I spoke, a knock came at the door. Hale stood there, face grave. He held a file.
“Adrian. We found something. Clara’s medical records. Hidden away. Under another name.” He paused. “Adrian… Clara was treated for assault. Six months before Rose was born. Severe trauma. Reported to police, then withdrawn. The perpetrator’s name… redacted. But the officer’s notes suggest she was attacked by someone she knew. Someone powerful.”
I gripped the desk edge. “Vivian.”
“Possibly. Or… someone else. Someone close to Vivian. Someone who would have the power to make her withdraw the complaint. Someone who would have the money and influence to bury the truth.”

“Harrington,” I whispered. Celeste’s brother. Her father. Someone in that powerful, dangerous family.
Hale nodded slowly. “And if Rose is his daughter… then Vivian wasn’t protecting a secret. She was protecting a bloodline. And she died to keep it pure.”
