Chapter 19 - THE HEALING

Months turned into a year. Then another. The news moved on. New stories replaced ours. We lived. We laughed. We healed—not perfectly, not all at once, but steadily.

Lily grew tall and bright, excelling in school, protective and gentle with Rose. Rose became a sunny, curious child, running through the house calling for both her sister and her father. She looked increasingly like Clara—the same eyes, the same smile—and every time I looked at her, I felt a bittersweet joy. A life born from pain, blooming beautifully anyway.

I kept Clara’s journal on a shelf where anyone could reach it. A reminder. A promise. A warning that silence serves only cruelty.

One evening Lily found me staring at it. She walked over and leaned against me.

“You didn’t write the last page,” she observed. “The story stops where she died.”

I looked at her. “Because the rest was ours to write.”

Lily smiled. “And we wrote a happy ending.”

“The best kind,” I agreed. “Hard-won. True. And entirely ours.”
