Chapter 18 - THE GRAVE

On the way home, I drove to the cemetery. Clara’s grave had been unmarked until recently. Now a simple stone read: CLARA MARIE HALE — LOVED MORE THAN SHE KNEW.

Lily laid a bouquet of wildflowers at the base. Rose reached out and touched the stone gently, as if understanding.

“Mommy,” Lily whispered, “we won. They can’t hurt us anymore. Daddy is taking care of us. And I’m taking care of Rose. Just like I promised.”

She stood quiet a long time. Then turned to me. “Do you think she forgives us? For not coming sooner?”

I knelt beside her. “She forgave you long ago. She never blamed us. She only loved us. And she knew—one day—we would be together again.”
