Chapter 11 - THE AFTERSHOCK

The next days were the strangest of my life. The story spread like wildfire. Headlines everywhere: BILLIONAIRE’S SON-IN-LAW ACCUSED OF ASSAULT. CONFESSION LETTER REVEALS DEADLY COVER-UP. THE TWO GIRLS AT THE CENTER OF EVERYTHING.

Julian denied everything. Filed defamation suits by the dozen. Called Vivian’s letter a forgery. Called me an opportunist who had abandoned his family and now sought revenge. Celeste issued a statement disavowing everything, claiming she had known nothing of her brother’s crimes. The Harrington family circled the wagons, unleashing an army of lawyers and spin-doctors.

But the public had already made up their minds. Clara’s name was being spoken with respect, not shame. Lily’s bravery had captured hearts everywhere. Strangers stood outside the courthouse holding signs: PROTECT THE GIRLS. JUSTICE FOR CLARA. BLOOD IS NOT OWNERSHIP.

It was not perfect. Reporters camped outside the building. Strangers called or sent letters. Lily grew quiet, retreating into books and drawing. Rose thrived, unaware of the storm swirling around her.

One afternoon Lily found me staring at old photographs of Clara.

“Do you think Mommy is proud of us?” she asked.

I pulled her into my lap. “I know she is. She always believed truth would win.”

“But Julian is still trying to take Rose.”

“Yes. But he is fighting the truth now—not just us. And truth has a way of growing stronger no matter how hard you try to bury it.”

That same evening, the District Attorney’s office called. They were opening a full criminal investigation into Julian Harrington. Into Vivian’s death. Into every suspicious event surrounding Clara’s final months. They wanted Lily’s statement. Mine. Every piece of evidence.

The weight of it was staggering. We had crossed a point of no return. Either Julian would go to prison—or he would destroy us. There was no middle ground anymore.
