Chapter 12 - THE WITNESS FROM THE PAST

Two weeks later, a woman showed up at the penthouse door. Quiet, nervous, clutching a worn handbag. She was middle-aged, with kind eyes and trembling hands.

“Mr. Vale… I’m Marta. I was Clara’s neighbor at the old apartment building.”

I invited her in, offering tea. She sat twisting her fingers together until Lily walked into the room. Marta’s face softened instantly.

“Lily. I remember you. You used to leave drawings on my doorknob.”

Lily stepped forward cautiously. “You gave us cookies.”

“I did, dear. I did.” Marta turned back to me, her expression hardening. “I saw everything. That woman Vivian visiting Clara. The arguments. Clara crying for hours afterward. I saw Julian’s car parked out front more than once. And I saw Clara leave the house in terrible distress the week she died.”

She pulled an envelope from her bag. “Clara gave me this the day before she passed. Said if anything happened to her… I should give it to no one but you. I was afraid. They threatened me too. But seeing the news… reading what she wrote… I couldn’t stay silent anymore.”

I opened the envelope. My hands shook.

It was Clara’s journal. The final months. Every page filled with her handwriting.

*He came back. Threatened me. Said if I told anyone… Lily and Rose would suffer. Vivian said she would make sure no one believed me. I’m so afraid. Adrian, please forgive me. I didn’t tell you because I thought I was protecting the girls. But now I realize silence only protects the guilty.*

Page after page. Dates. Times. Quotes. Everything Julian had said. Everything Vivian had done. The threats against Lily. The cancelled prescriptions. The way they had slowly cut her off from help.

Marta leaned forward. “Clara wrote every detail. Names. Dates. Plate numbers. She said if she died… this would be enough to destroy them.”

I closed the journal gently. It was more than evidence. It was Clara’s voice, speaking from the grave. Fighting for her daughters one last time.

Lily reached out and touched the cover. “It’s Mommy’s words.”

“Yes,” I said, voice thick. “And she told us everything. Julian cannot lie his way out of this.”

But as I looked deeper into the pages, a final note caught my eye—scrawled in shaky handwriting on the very last page:

*If you are reading this, I am gone. Protect Lily. Protect Rose. And know this—Vivian did not act alone. There was someone else. Someone even I was afraid to name. Someone standing right beside you, Adrian. Trust no one. Not until you know the whole truth.*

My blood ran cold.

Clara had known. Even then. She had tried to warn me.

Hale walked into the room moments later, holding his phone pale-faced.

“Adrian… we have a problem. The lead investigator on our case—he pulled himself off the file. Said conflict of interest. And the judge assigned to hear Julian’s custody motion? He’s Harrington’s former law partner.”

I stood slowly. “They bought the system.”

“Not just bought it,” Hale said grimly. “They built it. And Clara was right. There IS someone else. Deep inside this investigation. Feeding Julian every move we make. Every word we speak.”

I looked at Clara’s journal. Someone standing right beside you.

My eyes moved to Hale. To Marta. To everyone close.

“Who?” I whispered.

Hale leaned in, voice dropping to a whisper. “I don’t know yet. But I will find out. And Adrian… until I do. Trust no one. Not even me.”
