Chapter 4 - The Hidden Audit

By midnight, the drawing room had emptied out, and the grand mansion had settled into an eerie, deceptive silence. Vada was still hunched over her desk under the weak glow of a green-shaded desk lamp, meticulously cross-referencing wire transfers with local property taxes.

What she found next made her blood run cold.

Buried deep within a secondary corporate folder marked Confidential - E. Kinnard, Vada discovered a series of unauthorized loans taken out against the estate using forged signatures. More than thirty thousand dollars had vanished from the maintenance fund in the last month alone, funneled directly into a private account controlled exclusively by her mother.

"She's not just spending our savings," Vada whispered to the empty room, staring at the glowing numbers on her laptop screen. "She's liquidating the entire property behind our backs."

The realization hit her with staggering force. Her mother had no intention of saving the estate; she was planning a massive exit strategy, intending to secure a rich husband for one of the sisters, pocket whatever cash was left, and leave the rest of the family—and anyone else tied to the estate—to drown in debt.

Vada’s fingers flew across the keyboard, saving encrypted copies of every single fraudulent transaction to an external flash drive. If her family was going to treat her like a disposable servant, she would no longer protect them from the consequences of their own corruption. She held the keys to the estate's true financial survival, and the game of obedience was officially over.
