Chapter 12 - The Business Collapses

Back inside Meadowlark Hall, the absence of Vada’s quiet, diligent labor triggered an immediate, catastrophic collapse. Within two weeks of her departure, the estate’s daily operations descended into chaotic disarray.

Without Vada managing the backend books, paying the utility vendors, and juggling the creditors, bills went unpaid, checks bounced, and bank notices piled up in the foyer unread. Eleanor, utterly incapable of balancing a checkbook, continued to write checks against accounts that had already been frozen by the bank.

One rainy Tuesday morning, a terrifying commotion echoed through the grand foyer. Heavy boots stomped across the marble floor as three bank bailiff officers, accompanied by federal asset receivers, marched into the mansion with stern, unyielding expressions.

Chloe dropped her coffee cup, shattering it against the floor. "What... what are you doing here?! Who let you in?!"

The lead officer pulled a thick stack of legal documents from his briefcase, unfolding a formal foreclosure decree.

"By order of the New England Superior Court and primary creditors, this property, along with all associated liquid assets, is hereby seized due to chronic default on commercial loans totaling over two million dollars," the officer declared loudly, holding up the seal. "You have forty-eight hours to vacate the premises."
