Chapter 2 - The Unseen Glance

"Allow me, miss," Truett said quietly, taking the linen napkin from Vada’s hand with smooth, controlled efficiency. He dabbed the drop of tea from his sleeve himself, his gaze lingering on her for a fraction of a second longer than social etiquette permitted.

Eleanor rushed forward, her face twisted in an anxious grimace as she waved her hands dismissively at Vada.

"You clumsy, careless girl!" Eleanor scolded sharply, forcing an artificial laugh as she looked back at Truett. "You must forgive her, Mr. Barlow. She is merely part of the household staff's auxiliary help. We keep her around out of pure charity, of course. She lacks the grace and breeding of my true daughters."

Vada felt a familiar, stinging ache in her chest, but she kept her spine straight. She didn't flinch, nor did she lower her head in submissive shame as she usually did.

Truett noticed the quiet defiance in her posture. He looked past Eleanor’s theatrical display, observing the faint ink stains on Vada’s fingers—stains that didn't come from serving tea, but from heavy accounting ledgers and financial paperwork.

"Auxiliary help?" Truett repeated, his deep voice carrying a subtle, probing weight that made Eleanor pause. He turned his attention back to Vada, ignoring Chloe’s desperate attempt to regain his attention by giggling louder. "Is that right, miss? Is your only duty in this house pouring tea?"

Vada looked up, her clear eyes meeting the billionaire's intense gaze directly. For a split second, a silent communication passed between them—an unspoken understanding that beneath the glittering surface of Meadowlark Hall, a very different reality was being hidden.

"My duties here, Mr. Barlow, extend far beyond what meets the eye," Vada replied evenly, her voice calm and articulate, entirely devoid of the simpering tones her sisters used.

Truett’s lips curved into a faint, appreciative smirk. But Eleanor’s face drained of color. Terrified that Vada’s unexpected composure would disrupt her meticulously crafted mating dance, Eleanor stepped aggressively between them, clapping her hands together with false cheer.

"Enough of this foolishness!" Eleanor declared loudly, grabbing Vada’s arm in a bruising grip. "Vada, take the tray and get out of our sight immediately. You have disgraced us enough for one evening."
