Chapter 3 - The Quiet ComplianceOn the morning of the anniversary gala, Ethan sent one final text message to my old phone number:

Maya, tonight is the biggest night of my career. The board is announcing my promotion to Chief Operating Officer. Don't ruin this. My mother left a check for fifty thousand dollars with your apartment manager. Take the money and leave town.

I didn't reply.

Instead, I sat in a private dressing room downtown, watching as a professional makeup artist carefully examined the healing scars on my face, shoulder, and legs.

“Do you want me to cover the bruises, ma’am?” the artist asked gently.

I looked in the mirror at the deep purple welt beneath my right eye and the healing scrapes across my collarbone and thighs—the exact marks left from being dragged across the sand.

“No,” I said, my voice clear and unshakable. “Don't cover a single scratch. Leave the sand on my skin.”

I picked up the outfit I had prepared for the evening: a simple, dusty-blue two-piece bikini—the exact swimsuit I had been wearing on the beach when Ethan assaulted me.

Beside it lay a leather jacket, my credentials, and an encrypted media drive.

At seven o'clock, three blacked-out SUVs pulled up to the rear entrance of the Grand Harbor Hotel, where four hundred high-society guests, board members, and politicians were gathering for Hartwell Dynamics’ silver anniversary.

Arthur Hartwell stepped out of the second vehicle, holding his gold-topped walking stick.

“Are you ready, Maya?” Mr. Hartwell asked, looking at me with deep, paternal respect.

“I’ve been ready for two weeks, sir,” I replied.
