Chapter 13 - The Legal Reckoning

Six months after the aborted wedding ceremony, the State Superior Court delivered its final verdict in the criminal and civil trials against Evelyn Harrow.

Standing in the packed courtroom, dressed in a sharp navy blue business suit, I watched as the judge handed down a sentence of five years in federal prison for corporate fraud and malicious destruction of private property, alongside a multi-million-dollar restitution order to repay the embezzled funds.

Evelyn sat at the defense table, looking decades older, her hair unstyled, wearing a standard orange jumpsuit. When she caught my eye across the courtroom, she didn't look angry anymore; she looked hollow, defeated, and utterly broken.

She had tried to teach me how to "know my place." Instead, she had taught me that a woman who builds her worth on the destruction of others will always end up with nothing. I turned away, walking out of the courtroom doors into the bright autumn sunlight, leaving the past behind for good.
