The Unmasked Truth / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - The Trial and TriumphSix months later, the federal court was packed to capacity.

The trial of Daniel Sterling was the biggest story in the state. The prosecution presented a mountain of evidence: my forensic report, the hospital records, the IP logs, and the chilling audio recording of the night Daniel attacked me.

The defense tried to argue that the audio was manipulated, but our expert witness proved its authenticity beyond a shadow of a doubt.

When the jury returned after only two hours of deliberation, the verdict was unanimous.

"On the count of bank fraud, we find the defendant guilty. On the count of grand larceny, guilty. On the count of aggravated domestic assault, guilty."

Daniel slumped in his chair, his head in his hands.

Evelyn, sitting in the row behind him, collapsed into tears as the judge sentenced Daniel to twelve years in a federal prison, with no possibility of parole, and ordered the immediate seizure of all his remaining assets to pay restitution to his victims—including me.

Evelyn’s colonial home was auctioned off the following week. She was forced to move into a tiny, run-down apartment on the outskirts of the city, her high-society friends having completely abandoned her.

As I walked out of the courthouse that final day, the sun was bright and warm. The media surrounded me, but this time, the questions were different.

"Ms. Sterling, how does it feel to have your name cleared?"

"How does it feel to win?"

I paused on the stone steps, looking at the cameras. "I didn't just clear my name," I said, my voice carrying over the crowd. "I proved that silence isn't weakness. And that some women can still count."
