The Unmasked Truth / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - The Noon ConfrontationBy 11:30 a.m., my townhouse looked like a war zone, but for once, I was the one controlling the battlefield.

I didn't pack neatly. I opened my drawers, throwing my clothes into a black rolling suitcase. In my haste, some of my summer clothes—including a dark blue bikini and a loose white cover-up shirt—spilled onto the bed. I stopped and looked at the blue bikini.

An hour ago, my father’s attorney had called with a piece of advice that made my blood run cold: “If the police arrive, do not cover a single mark. Let them see exactly what he did. If you wear a turtleneck, his lawyer will argue it was a minor domestic dispute. Let the world see the violence.”

I made a decision. I stripped off the heavy sweater I was wearing and changed into the blue bikini, throwing the unbuttoned white shirt over my shoulders. My ribs were black and blue. The handprints on my hips were clear. I would not hide. I would not wear his green concealer. I was going to let the neighbors, the police, and his mother see exactly what kind of man Daniel Sterling was.

At exactly 11:58 a.m., a sleek black Mercedes pulled into the driveway. Through the living room window, I watched Daniel get out, adjusting his suit jacket, laughing at something his mother, Evelyn, was saying. Evelyn looked immaculate, her blonde hair coiffed to perfection, a designer handbag clutched in her manicured hand.

They opened the front door, their laughter echoing into the hallway.

"Mara, darling! We're here!" Evelyn called out, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "I hope you made that lovely chicken salad—"

She stopped dead in her tracks.

Daniel stepped inside behind her, his confident smile freezing instantly.

There was no lunch on the table. The kitchen was dark. Standing in the entryway of the living room was my father, Arthur, flanked by two uniformed police officers. Beside them stood my lawyer, holding a stack of freshly printed documents.

And there I was, standing in the center of the room in my bikini and unbuttoned white shirt, my bruised, swollen face completely exposed, holding the handle of my black rolling suitcase.

"What is the meaning of this?" Daniel hissed, his voice dropping an octave as his eyes darted from my father to the police officers. "Mara, what crazy game are you playing?"

"It's over, Daniel," I said, my voice steady and cold. "No more cover-ups."
