The Unmasked Truth / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The Arrest and the Aftermath"Get these people out of my house!" Daniel snarled, stepping forward. His face was flushed with a mixture of rage and embarrassment. He looked at the officers. "My wife had an accident in the bathroom this morning. She's clearly unstable. She’s trying to frame me."

"An accident?" one of the officers, a stern-faced man named Deputy Miller, stepped forward. He looked at the horrific purple bruise swelling under my left eye, then down at the clear handprints on my bare ribs. "Sir, those aren't bathroom-fall bruises. Those are defensive wounds."

Evelyn gasped, clutching her pearls. "This is ridiculous! My son is a respected businessman! Mara, stop this embarrassing theatrical display immediately. Put some clothes on and tell these men to leave!"

"She's not telling anyone to leave, Evelyn," my father stepped forward, his towering frame casting a long shadow over Daniel. "But you two are going to have a very long conversation with the state attorney."

"You have no proof!" Daniel yelled, his composure completely fracturing. He grabbed my suitcase, trying to pull it away from me, screaming, "You're not leaving this house! Everything here belongs to me!"

The second officer moved with lightning speed. "Sir, step away from the victim. Keep your hands where I can see them."

"No! She's my wife!" Daniel roared, lunging toward me.

Before he could reach me, the officers grabbed him, slamming him against the open front door frame. Handcuts clicked shut around his wrists.

"Daniel Sterling, you are under arrest for domestic assault and battery," Deputy Miller declared.

The scene outside was chaotic. The quiet, upscale neighborhood was suddenly filled with the flashing red and blue lights of police cruisers. Neighbors stepped onto their lawns, whispering and pointing.

As the officers dragged a barefoot, screaming Daniel down the front steps, I walked out behind them. My black suitcase rolled behind me. My clothes from the struggle were strewn across the driveway.

Evelyn followed, her face a mask of absolute horror and shock. She stared at me, then at her handcuffed son, unable to comprehend how her perfect, controlling dynasty had shattered in a single afternoon.
