The sound of the ocean waves crashing against the shore was the most peaceful melody I had ever heard.
I stood on the deck of my new beachside cottage, holding a warm cup of tea. The breeze caught my hair, but there was no fear, no tension, and no bruises. My skin was clear, my body healed, and my mind completely at peace.
I had used the restitution funds and my restored savings to launch my own independent forensic firm, Vance & Sterling Consulting. We specialized in helping women protect their assets and escape financially abusive relationships. We already had more clients than we could handle, and my father was working alongside me as our chief investigator, finally spending the quality time with me we had lost during my marriage.
From the beach below, a familiar laugh drifted up to the deck.
I looked down to see my father building a giant sandcastle with my young nephew, their laughter mixing with the salty air.

My phone buzzed on the table. It was a notification from my bank, confirming the final transfer of the liquidation of Daniel’s seized assets. I deleted the notification without a second thought. The money was nice, but the true asset was my life.
I stepped off the deck, walking down the wooden stairs to join my family on the warm sand. The nightmare was over. The numbers had settled, the ledger of my life was finally balanced, and for the first time in my life, the future was completely mine to write.
