The Unmasked Truth / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Smear CampaignEvelyn’s PR machine went into overdrive.

A popular local lifestyle blog published an anonymous "inside source" interview, alleging that I had a history of severe depression and financial recklessness. The article implied that I had ruined Daniel’s business through my own erratic behavior and that the bruises on my face were self-inflicted during a manic episode.

The comments section was brutal.

“She looks crazy in that photo walking away in a bikini,” one user wrote. “Why was she dressed like that if she was being abused? Seems like a setup,” wrote another.

My father wanted to sue the blog immediately, but I held him back. "No, Dad. This is exactly what they want. They want us to get defensive. They want a public media war to distract from the upcoming court dates."

"But they're destroying your name, Mara!" he argued, his fists clenching.

"A name is easily rebuilt once the truth comes out," I said calmly. "Let them talk. The grand jury meets in three days. When the federal prosecutors present my audit, the blog posts won't matter."

That evening, I recorded a simple, three-minute video. I sat in a plain white t-shirt, no makeup, with my healing bruises clearly visible under the soft light. I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I simply read the dates, the bank account numbers, and the forensic timeline of the identity theft Daniel had committed against me.

I uploaded it with the caption: “The numbers do not lie. See you in court, Daniel.”

Within six hours, the video went viral on Facebook, garnering over two million views. The public tide began to turn. The cold, logical precision of my delivery was impossible to dismiss as a "manic episode."
