Nearly one hundred wealthy guests drank champagne around a illuminated swimming pool, celebrating what my mother, Evelyn, claimed was Vanessa’s imminent arrival with her 'newborn child.'
Evelyn stood beside the pool in a emerald green formal gown, smiling as guests offered congratulations. My father stood nearby in a tux, sipping scotch.
Suddenly, the grand wooden gates burst open.
Detective Sarah Vance entered alongside six armed police officers, followed by Daniel and a team of news cameras!
The music cut off instantly.
“Evelyn and Richard Miller!” Detective Vance called out over the poolside speaker system. “Step away from the pool!”
Evelyn’s smile turned into a frozen mask of horror. “What is the meaning of this disruption?! This is a private family celebration!”
