Chapter 1 - The Hospital Bag in the DoorwayAt eight months pregnant, I begged my parents to take me to the hospital. My mother refused because helping me would expose what she had done to my baby.

The contraction hit so hard that my phone slipped from my hand and shattered against the kitchen floor. I was thirty-four weeks pregnant, alone, and suddenly unable to stand. Warm fluid ran down my legs. I grabbed the edge of the granite counter and called my mother from the house phone.

“Mom, something is wrong. I think I’m in premature labor.”

She sighed heavily over the line. “Claire, we’ve been planning this family vacation for months.”

“Please come get me. Daniel isn’t answering his phone.”

My husband was supposed to be driving home from his office downtown, but every single call went straight to voicemail.

Another searing contraction tightened across my stomach. “I need the hospital right now, Mom!”

“You always panic,” Mom said coldly. “We’re not canceling our trip because you’re overreacting.”

Then my father’s muffled voice came through the speaker. “Tell her to call an ambulance.”

Mom lowered her voice, but I still heard her sharp whisper: “If she goes to the hospital tonight, everything falls apart.”

I froze, my breath catching in my throat. “What falls apart, Mom?”

The line went silent for three agonizing seconds. Then she said, “Nothing. Just rest and call your doctor in the morning.” She hung up.

I dialed 911, but before the operator could finish taking my address, the front door clicked open.

My younger sister, Vanessa, walked inside using a key I had never given her. She was wearing my mother’s long green coat and carrying a white leather hospital bag with my name written on the luggage tag.

“You’re early,” Vanessa whispered, her face pale.

I backed away against the kitchen counter, holding my stomach. “Why do you have that bag, Vanessa?”

Her eyes dropped to the puddle on the floor. Then she reached into the bag and pulled out a thick legal folder. On top was a private hospital admission form. My forged signature appeared at the bottom.

But the patient name was not mine. It was Vanessa’s.
