Chapter 9 - The Handcuff VerdictSix months after the night in the hallway, the criminal trial of State v. Daniel Mercer concluded at the Superior Court.

The courtroom was packed to capacity with domestic violence advocates, community members, and media reporters.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing an elegant navy dress, my posture straight, my chin held high, holding my sisterâs hand.
Daniel sat at the defense table in an orange prison jumpsuit, his hair unkempt, his face gaunt, looking like a hollow shell of the man who had punched the wall beside my head.
The judge slammed his gavel down, delivering a scathing judgment.
âDaniel Mercer,â the judge declared, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. âYou hid behind a mask of community charity while inflicting calculated cruelty on your wife. Your actions represent the lowest form of cowardice.â
The judge sentenced Daniel Mercer to twelve years in state prison without option for early parole for felony assault, extortion, witness tampering, and grand financial fraud.
As court marshals pulled Daniel up from his seat, he turned his head to look at me in the gallery.
