Chapter 2 - The Wire Under the CuffI pressed the tiny button sewn inside my cuff.

Before Daniel could comprehend my words, the door to the guest room swung open with a loud, forceful bang.

Detective Mara Ruiz and her partner, Detective Miller, stepped into the hallway, badges gleaming around their necks, service weapons drawn and aimed low.

“POLICE! STEP AWAY FROM HER NOW, DANIEL!” Detective Ruiz shouted, her voice echoing off the hardwood floors with absolute authority.

Daniel froze. The color drained from his face so fast it looked as if a ghost had passed through him. His hands hovered near my chin for one terrifying second before he instinctively raised them in the air, backing away toward the living room archway.

“What... what is this?!” Daniel stammered, his practiced charm completely shattering. “Officers, this is a mistake! My wife is having an emotional breakdown! She was threatening to harm herself!”

Detective Ruiz stepped between us, shielding me with her body, while Detective Miller moved smoothly behind Daniel, forcing his arms behind his back.

“We heard every word through the audio transmitter, Mr. Mercer,” Detective Ruiz said coldly, pulling out her handcuffs. “We heard the threat, we heard the punch into the wall, and we recorded your full admission of financial isolation.”

CLICK-CLACK.

The heavy steel handcuffs snapped around Daniel’s wrists.

He shrieked in rage, thrashing against Detective Miller’s grip. “Claire! Tell them to stop! You’re ruining everything! You owe me!”

I stood against the wall, brushing the plaster dust from my blouse, looking him dead in the eye with calm, unshakeable silence.
