Chapter 5 - The Shadow of Daniel MercerForty-eight hours later, Daniel was released on a two-hundred-thousand-dollar bail posted by his wealthy brother.

His first move was to attempt to freeze my personal bank account—only to discover that Sarah Jenkins had already executed a court order transferring fifty percent of his liquid assets into an escrow trust pending our divorce hearing!

Furious, humiliated, and facing total ruin, Daniel attempted to turn the community against me.

He posted fake statements online claiming I was suffering from severe psychological distress, called our mutual friends, and arranged an emergency meeting with his charity board of directors to claim he was the victim of a calculated smear campaign.

At six o'clock on Thursday evening, I stood in the kitchen of my home, watching the sunset through the window.

My phone chimed on the counter.

It was an anonymous text message containing a photo of my front porch taken from across the street, followed by a message:

UNKNOWN: You think a wire makes you safe, Claire? You have nothing without me. Drop the charges by tomorrow or everyone finds out who you really are.

I didn't panic. I didn't cry.

I forwarded the text message directly to Detective Ruiz and Sarah Jenkins.

Daniel was digging his own prison cell deeper with every breath he took.
