Chapter 6 - The Quiet Between UsTwo hours later, Judge Vance delivered her ruling.

Citing Sophia’s clear commitment to restructuring her professional life, the positive domestic environment provided by our combined family, and Eva’s explicit desire to remain with her mother, the judge denied Richard’s petition for primary custody, granting Sophia full legal authority.

Richard stormed out of the courtroom, his face red with humiliation, while his attorneys gathered their files in silence.

In the hallway outside, Sophia stood frozen, as if her mind couldn't fully process the victory.

Then, she turned to me, her dark eyes brimming with tears, and threw her arms around my neck, pulling me tight against her. I wrapped my arms around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet as she buried her face in my shoulder, sobbing with pure, overwhelming relief.

“We won, Liam,” she wept softly. “We won.”

“I told you,” I whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her hair. “No one was taking her from you.”

That evening, we celebrated at the estate with a small, intimate dinner. My father, Joe, joined us in his wheelchair, chatting happily with the girls while we ate fresh pasta and pie.

Later that night, after my father had been driven back to the center and the girls were asleep, Sophia and I stood on the back patio, listening to the cool autumn breeze rustle through the trees.

The tension that had fueled our contract for months was gone, replaced by an intense, electric quiet.

“You were incredible on the stand today, Liam,” Sophia said, leaning against the wooden railing, looking up at the stars. “What you said... about standing by us...”

I stepped closer to her, the distance between us vanishing. “I meant every word, Sophia.”

She looked up at me, her lips parting slightly. “Even the parts that weren't in the contract?”

“Especially those parts.”

I reached out, gently cupping her face in my hands. Sophia leaned into my palm, closing her eyes with a soft sigh, before looking back up at me with absolute devotion.

I leaned down and kissed her.

It was not a contract kiss, nor a public display for cameras. It was slow, deep, and filled with months of built-up desire, passion, and unshakeable love. Sophia wrapped her arms around my neck, pulling me closer, kissing me back with a fierce intensity that erased every doubt in my mind.
