Chapter 3 - The Shadow at the GateBy the second month, the arrangement had developed a comfortable rhythm.

I began my new role in Bole Industrial’s technical operations, using my hands-on experience to streamline maintenance protocols across three regional plants. My father, Joe, was released from the hospital and moved into a comfortable rehabilitation center ten minutes away, his treatments fully covered and his spirits soaring.

At home, the house felt less like an empty museum and more like a real home. The polished marble foyer now held a basket of dirty soccer cleats, and crayon drawings hung from the stainless-steel refrigerator in the kitchen.

However, the impending custody battle hung over us like a thundercloud.

Richard Sterling, Sophia’s ex-husband, was a ruthless corporate lawyer with deep political connections. He had spent months building a case that Sophia was an aloof, career-obsessed mother who neglected her daughter’s emotional needs.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, Richard made an unannounced visit to the estate.

I was in the driveway, under the hood of my old Ford truck, teaching Emma and Eva how an alternator worked. Both girls had smudges of black grease on their cheeks and were laughing as I pointed out the belt pulley.

A sleek silver Porsche pulled up the driveway, stopping abruptly near the garage.

Richard stepped out, dressed in a tailored navy suit, holding an expensive leather briefcase. He glanced at my rusty truck with visible disdain before turning his cold, sharp eyes toward the girls.

“Eva,” Richard said, his tone dripping with fake warmth. “Come here, sweetheart.”

Eva instantly stiffened, dropping her small wrench and stepping behind my legs, holding onto my belt loop.

Richard’s smile faltered. He looked at me, assessing my dusty work clothes, broad shoulders, and calloused hands with complete contempt.

“So,” Richard sneered, stepping closer. “You’re the maintenance man Sophia hired to play daddy.”

I wiped my hands on a shop rag, stepping smoothly between Richard and the girls. “I’m Liam. And you’re trespassing on private property, Mr. Sterling.”

“This is my daughter’s home,” Richard snapped. “I have every right to inspect her living conditions. And frankly, seeing her covered in grease with a factory worker doesn't look good for Sophia’s custody evaluation.”

Before I could answer, the front door opened, and Sophia walked out, her face an icy mask of absolute authority.

“Leave, Richard,” Sophia said, her voice dropping an octave into pure steel. “You have no visitation rights today. Speak to my legal counsel.”

Richard glared at Sophia, then looked back at me, a cruel, calculating smile spreading across his face. “Enjoy your temporary gig, mechanic. When the judge sees through this fake marriage, you’ll be right back in the gutter where you belong.”
