Chapter 3 - The Sterling Revelation

Harper Ross walked through the double mahogany front doors, flanked by four federal marshals and two corporate forensic investigators.
Harper was fifty-five, razor-sharp, and the most feared commercial restructuring attorney on Wall Street. He unclasped a red leather binder, setting three certified copies of federal foreclosure notices onto the console table.
"William Vance, Andrew Vance, and Chloe Vance," Harper announced with booming legal authority. "Pursuant to default covenants established under the New York Uniform Commercial Code, Sterling Horizon Holdings has executed an immediate, full-balance acceleration of two hundred and eighty-four million dollars in senior secured liabilities."
"Sterling Horizon...?" William stammered, grabbing the wall for support. "We don't deal with Sterling! We deal with Aegis!"
"Aegis is a single-purpose entity wholly owned by Ms. Elena Sterling," Harper stated, stepping aside and bowing respectfully toward me. "The Chief Executive Officer standing before you."
Andrew’s breath caught in his throat. His face drained of color as he looked from Harper to me, his jaw trembling violently.
"Elena...?" Andrew stammered, taking a step backward. "You... you're Arthur Sterling’s daughter? The multi-billionaire?"
"I am," I said, descending the final steps onto the marble floor. "And when you struck me this morning, you violated Clause 14-B of your corporate financing indenture, which requires all managing principals to maintain clean criminal standing."
Margaret lunged forward, her pearl necklace bouncing against her chest as her aristocratic facade dissolved into shrill hysteria. "This is absurd! You can't seize our family legacy over a domestic dispute! We have political connections! William is personal friends with the state supreme court justice!"
"Your friend Justice Callahan was recused forty minutes ago when the Federal Bureau of Investigation unsealed wiretap records linking Vance Hospitality to money laundering and illegal offshore tax evasion," Harper replied coldly.

Chloe stepped out from the dining room, her phone in hand, looking terrified. "Dad... my black American Express card was just declined at the marina! What's happening?!"
"What's happening, Chloe," I said, looking her dead in the eye, "is that the free ride is over."
