Chapter 1 - The Coffee and the Strike

The morning sun cast golden trapezoids across the marble-floored chef's kitchen of the Vance family's private estate in Lake George, New York. Forty-eight hours earlier, five hundred guests had toasted my union with Andrew Vance at a lavish cathedral wedding in Manhattan. To the high-society columns, it was a fairy-tale merger: Andrew, the handsome heir to the Vance Hospitality Group, marrying Elena Rossi, an independent hospitality consultant.
What Andrew and his family did not know was that Elena Rossi was merely my professional consulting alias. My real name was Elena Sterling, sole heiress and controlling executive partner of Sterling Horizon Holdings—a private global asset management trust controlling over six billion dollars in commercial real estate, including every hotel mortgage, debt facility, and land lease tied to the Vance family name.
I had concealed my identity throughout our eight-month courtship because I wanted a man who loved me, not my balance sheet.
I stood beside the marble island in a champagne satin slip dress, setting down a platter of warm pancakes.
Twenty-four-year-old Chloe Vance leaned over the counter, finishing a bowl of fresh berries, leaving her dirty plate on the quartz edge.
"Chloe," I said with a polite, calm smile. "When you're finished, could you please rinse your plate and place it in the dishwasher?"
Before my sentence finished, the air shifted.
SMACK!
Andrew’s open palm struck my left cheek with concussive, violent force.
The impact snapped my neck sideways, sending me tumbling to the cold marble floor on my knees beside a shattered coffee mug, dark espresso pooling across the tile. Pain radiated through my jaw and temple.
Chloe didn't flinch. She laughed loudly, leaning against the counter with her porcelain coffee mug.
Standing over me in a tailored white dress shirt and dark trousers, Andrew’s face contorted in vicious, vein-bulging fury. He gripped my chin with bruising force, lifting my tear-streaked face upward.
"How dare you give orders to my sister in my parents' house?" Andrew roared, his gold wedding band glinting under the lights. "She is blood. You are a wife. Learn your place, or I'll teach you what happens when you disrespect a Vance."
At the dining table, his mother, Margaret, draped in a silk robe, delicately spread butter over toast with complete indifference. His father, William, lowered his Wall Street Journal with an annoyed sigh.
"Clean up the spilled coffee before the staff arrives, Elena," Margaret commanded flatly. "And make fresh pancakes for Chloe."
Chloe smiled, deliberately tilting her cup to pour another stream of hot coffee across the floor, splashing my bare knees.
"Clean that up too," Chloe mocked.
I knelt on the cold stone, tasting metallic blood on my lower lip. I didn't scream. I didn't cry.
I raised my eyes to the 4K wide-angle optical lens embedded inside the decorative crown molding above the pantry.
Margaret caught my glance and chuckled. "Don't bother looking at our security cameras, darling. Those tapes belong to William. Nobody will ever see this."
I reached up, carefully slipped my diamond wedding band off my finger, and laid it beside the puddle of spilled coffee on the floor.
"You're right, Margaret," I whispered, pulling my phone from beneath the island lip. "Those cameras don't belong to William. They never did."
With three quick taps on the encrypted screen, I transmitted an emergency priority alpha code to Harper Ross, my chief corporate counsel and head of private security at Sterling Horizon.
