Chapter 4 - The Great Exposure

Connor halted at the foot of the altar, his jaw clenching with uncontrollable fury. "Harper, you signed the divorce! You took your three months! You are nothing to this family!"

Betsy stood up from the front row, covering her mouth in dramatic horror. "You bitter, jealous wretch! How dare you bring that child here to ruin my son's wedding! Alyssa is carrying the true heir of this dynasty!"

Alyssa remained on her knees on the floral riser, clutching her rounded wedding dress with both hands, her eyes darting frantically toward the side exit.

"Is she, Betsy?" I asked, my voice carrying with crystal clarity across the silent, vaulted room.

I walked down the central marble aisle with slow, deliberate steps, holding Brinley securely on my hip. When I reached the foot of the altar, I stopped directly in front of Connor.

"You threw divorce papers in my face two hours after I gave birth," I said calmly. "You called our daughter worthless because she wasn't a boy. You invited the city’s elite here today to celebrate the birth of an heir you thought would replace us forever."

"And he will!" Connor sneered, reaching out an angry hand toward me. "Get out!"

I didn't flinch. Instead, I turned toward Alyssa, who was trembling on the riser.

Before Connor could grab my arm, I reached down with my right hand, caught the concealed seam beneath Alyssa's bridal lace, and pulled upward with sharp, decisive force.
