Chapter 2 - The Paper Citadel

The three months in the downtown apartment were not spent weeping in the dark. They were spent in the quiet, methodical assembly of an empire's destruction.

While Connor and Betsy flooded social media with lavish baby shower announcements and high-society engagement parties, I sat at my dining table with Marcus Vance—my grandfather's longtime corporate litigator and senior managing partner at Sterling & Vance Associates.

"Connor made a fatal error when he rushed this uncontested agreement, Harper," Marcus said, laying out three thick binders of corporate filings across the glass table. "He believed that because Apex Vanguard was incorporated during your marriage under his name, he held exclusive operational sovereignty."

"And the foundation patents?" I asked, gently swaying six-month-old Brinley in her portable bassinet.

"Your grandfather didn't sell those logistics routing patents to Apex Vanguard," Marcus explained with a thin, victorious smile. "He leased them to the firm under a revocable licensing agreement tied exclusively to your marital status and lawful direct descendants. The moment your divorce was certified by the state, the licensing fees skyrocketed to sixty percent of gross quarterly revenue. Furthermore, the master trust agreement dictates that forty-five percent of Apex Vanguard’s parent voting stock transfers automatically to your firstborn child upon her six-month milestone."

"Regardless of her gender," I noted softly.

"Regardless of anything," Marcus confirmed. "Brinley is legally the single largest individual shareholder of Apex Vanguard as of yesterday morning."

"What about Alyssa's miracle pregnancy?" I asked, handing Marcus a sealed manila envelope containing digital photo logs and medical clinic invoices.

Marcus opened the folder, his eyes scanning the private investigator's findings before letting out a low, disbelieving whistle. "Fascinating. Miss Alyssa has been visiting a specialty medical prosthetic studio in West Hollywood twice a month."

I stood up, holding Brinley against my hip. "Connor wanted a grand high-society wedding to legitimize his golden son. Let's make sure he gets an audience worthy of the occasion."
