Chapter 3 - The Gilded Ballroom

The Grand Versailles Ballroom at the Beverly Hills Plaza was bathed in the blinding radiance of ten crystal chandeliers and towering arches of white orchids. Over three hundred guests—venture capitalists, city council members, and high-society elites—sipped vintage champagne as strings played classical melodies.
At the front of the marble hall stood Connor, wearing a midnight-blue tuxedo with a satin bow tie. Beside him at the altar knelt Alyssa in an extravagant lace bridal ballgown and a glittering tiara. Betsy sat in the front row in a shimmering gold sequin dress, dabbing fake tears of joy with a lace handkerchief.
"Do you, Connor Vance, take Alyssa to be your lawfully wedded wife?" the officiant intoned over the sound system.
Before Connor could speak, the massive gilded double doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open with a thunderous crack that silenced the string quartet instantly.
Every head in the room turned.
I stepped across the threshold wearing a breathtaking, floor-length blush-pink silk ballgown hand-embroidered with cascading floral blooms. In my left arm, I held six-month-old Brinley, dressed in an identical matching miniature blush dress and floral headband.
Brinley looked around with big, curious brown eyes, completely unfazed by the sudden silence.
Gasps rippled through the pews. Aunt Clara dropped her champagne flute, while several board members stood half out of their seats in shock.
"Harper?!" Connor shouted, his face turning bright red as he stormed down the altar steps. "What are you doing here?! Security! Get this crazy woman out of my wedding!"

Two private security guards moved toward me, but Marcus Vance stepped through the doorway behind me, flashing a federal court preservation injunction.
"Touch her, and your security firm will be facing federal obstruction charges before sundown," Marcus announced with booming authority.
