The Shadow’s Audit / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - The Trial of Adrian ValeThe trial of Adrian Vale lasted three weeks, but for me, it felt like a lifetime of closure packed into a few days.

The prosecution presented a flawless case. The audio recording of Adrian's mother Celeste accusing me while I lay bleeding, and the forensic logs tracking the twelve million dollars to Vance's firm were presented in meticulous detail.

The defense tried to argue that the financial transactions were standard corporate relocations, but our expert witness—a senior forensic investigator from the SEC—proved their fraudulent nature beyond a shadow of a doubt.

When Adrian took the stand in his own defense, he attempted to maintain his charm, but under the prosecutor's sharp, relentless cross-examination, his composure completely shattered. He screamed, he blamed me, and he showed the world the exact monster I had lived with for three years.

The jury took less than two hours to return a verdict of guilty on all counts.

The judge sentenced Adrian to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary, with no possibility of parole for the first ten.

As they led him away, Celeste stood in the back of the courtroom, crying silently. She looked at me, her eyes filled with a mixture of anger and regret. I didn't look back. I had spent too many years worrying about what his family thought of me. Now, their opinions were completely weightless.
