The Shadow’s Audit / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - The Fortress of LiesThe arrest of Adrian Vale was the lead story on every major financial news network by morning.

The media footage showed him being led out of the executive hangar in handcuffs, his head bowed, his expensive clothes soaked and ruined. Vanessa was arrested alongside him, charged with conspiracy and receiving stolen property.

But the battle was far from over.

While Adrian sat in a federal holding cell, his high-priced defense attorney, Julian Vance, went to work. Vance was a ruthless legal mercenary who specialized in making corporate crimes disappear. Within hours of the arrest, he launched a massive counter-offensive in the media.

They leaked a series of highly edited, old audio recordings of my voice from the months following my father’s death. In the recordings, I sounded frantic, confused, and overwhelmed by grief. Vance used these to paint me as an unstable, vengeful wife who was trying to ruin her husband’s reputation because of a personal marital dispute.

"My client, Adrian Vale, is a brilliant developer who has been systematically targeted by a family that cannot accept the natural transition of corporate leadership," Vance declared in a live television interview. "We will prove in court that the financial records submitted by Mrs. Vale are fraudulent and manipulated."

I sat in my father’s old office at Vale-Carter Capital, watching the interview on the wall-mounted screen. The phone on the desk was ringing constantly, board members and major investors calling in a panic as our stock prices began to plummet.

Evelyn Shaw entered, her expression grim. "Clara, the board is panicking. Two of our biggest institutional investors, Vanguard Trust and Apex Capital, are threatening to pull their funding if we don't resolve this by the end of the week. They want a stable company, and right now, the media is calling this a toxic family war."

"They want stability?" I asked, turning my chair to face her. "Then we’ll give them the ultimate stability. We’re calling an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning."

"Are you ready for that, Clara?" Evelyn asked gently. "Vance is going to be there. He has proxies from Adrian’s remaining loyalists on the board. They are going to attack your credibility, your mental health, and your capability to lead."

I stood up, adjusting the lapels of my dark, tailored blazer. "Let them attack, Evelyn. My father always said that lies are like a paper fortress. They look imposing until you light a match. It’s time to burn it down."
