Chapter 10 - The Carter Legacy RestoredOne year later.

The sound of the ocean waves crashing against the shore was the most peaceful melody I had ever heard.
I stood on the wooden deck of my new cottage, holding a warm cup of tea. The breeze was cool, carrying the scent of salt and pine. The cottage was small, simple, and entirely mine. There were no expensive, cold marble floors, no heavy doors to lock me in, and no shouting.
I had used the recovered trust funds to establish a foundation called The Healing Shadow, a non-profit organization that provided legal aid, financial forensic auditing, and psychological support for women escaping domestic and financial abuse. We already had a small, dedicated staff, and Evelyn had agreed to serve on our board of directors.
From the beach below, a dog barked. I looked down to see my new golden retriever chasing a tennis ball across the wet sand.
My phone buzzed on the wooden railing. It was a message from Evelyn:
“The final liquidation of Adrian’s seized assets is complete. The funds have been transferred to the foundation's account. We can open the new shelter next month.”
I smiled, a deep, warm feeling of peace settling in my chest.
I touched my collarbone, feeling the faint, raised scar where his hand had once gripped me. It was still there, and it always would be. But it was no longer a symbol of pain, or a secret to be hidden under high collars and heavy makeup.

The ledger of my life was finally balanced, and the future was wide open.
