Chapter 4 - The Twelve-Million-Dollar TrailThe executive hangar was dark, the rain drumming a frantic rhythm against the massive corrugated steel roof.

A sleek, private Gulfstream jet sat on the tarmac, its engines idling with a low, powerful hum. Vanessa stood near the boarding stairs, clutching a designer leather handbag, her eyes darting nervously around the shadows. She was wearing a trench coat, her long blonde hair pulled back, completely stripped of her usual corporate glamour.
The door to the hangar creaked open, and Adrian rushed in. He was disheveled, his tie missing, his expensive suit soaked with rain.
"Do you have the cash?" he gasped, grabbing Vanessa’s arms. "Did the transfer go through?"
"No!" Vanessa cried, her voice high with panic. "The bank rejected the routing code! They said the account was locked due to an ongoing investigation! Adrian, what did you do? The federal agents were at my penthouse this morning!"
"That’s impossible!" Adrian screamed, his face contorted in rage. "Clara doesn't have the authority to lock those accounts! She’s a child! She’s nothing without me!"
"She’s a Carter, Adrian," a voice called out from the darkness of the hangar.
The high-intensity floodlights of the hangar snapped on, blinding them both.
Evelyn Shaw walked out from the shadows, flanked by four federal agents in windbreakers labeled FBI. Behind them stood Marcus and several armed guards from Carter Protective Services.
And in the center of them all was me.
I looked at Adrian, the man who had tried to convince the world I was broken. "The twelve million dollars you tried to wire to Panama was flagged forty-eight hours ago, Adrian. I didn't lock the accounts. The Federal Reserve did."
Adrian took a step back, his hand reaching toward his pocket. "Clara, please... we can talk about this. I did it for us. The market was crashing, I was trying to save our future—"

"You did it for yourself," I said, my voice cold and clear. "And you did it by destroying my father's life's work. But you forgot one thing, Adrian. You forgot that the name on the building isn't Vale. It’s Carter."
The lead FBI agent stepped forward, presenting a red-sealed warrant. "Daniel Adrian Vale, you are under arrest for federal bank fraud, money laundering, and grand larceny."
