Chapter 9 - The Sanctuary of the Carter EstateBy midnight, the media frenzy outside the Plaza Hotel had reached a fever pitch, but Emily was miles away, floating safely above the chaos in the obsidian sanctuary of Carter Manor.

She stood on the grand stone balcony of the master suite, wrapped in a plush silk bathrobe, watching the white-capped waves of Lake Michigan crash against the jagged cliffs below. The storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, starry night sky that seemed to stretch out into infinity.
Footsteps echoed softly behind her. The heavy oak door swung open, and Matthew stepped out onto the balcony, carrying two crystal glasses filled with vintage amber scotch.
“You handled yourself down there like a seasoned veteran of corporate warfare,” Matthew noted, handing her a glass before leaning against the stone balustrade beside her.
Emily took a small sip of the scotch, letting the warm, smoky liquid burn her throat before answering. “I didn't feel like a veteran. I felt like I was standing on the edge of a cliff.”
“The edge is where you find out if you can fly,” Matthew replied smoothly, turning his dark gaze toward her. “What happens now, Emily? Vance Global is officially under Carter control, and your father’s estate has been fully restored to your name. You are one of the wealthiest women in the Midwest.”
Emily looked down into her glass, watching the moonlight ripple across the golden liquid. “I want to rebuild it. Not as a predatory conglomerate, but the way my father intended—philanthropic, ethical, and innovative.”
“An admirable ambition,” Matthew murmured, stepping slightly closer. The clean, intoxicating scent of his cologne mixed with the crisp lake breeze. “And what about your living arrangements? You don't need to stay here out of obligation anymore. The Manhattan penthouse is vacant, and your security detail can be stationed anywhere you choose.”
Emily paused. She looked up, meeting his intense, unreadable grey eyes. For the past forty-eight hours, this man had shielded her from the wolves, provided an army to fight her battles, and treated her not as a victim, but as an equal partner in a high-stakes war.
“Who said anything about leaving?” Emily whispered with a faint, daring smile.

Matthew’s dark eyes flared with a sudden, intense heat—a rare crack in his impenetrable armor. He reached out, his warm fingers gently tracing the smooth skin of her jawline, right over the spot where Diane’s bruise had finally faded away.
“Good,” Matthew murmured against her lips. “Because I had no intention of letting you go.”
