Chapter 8 - The Downfall of Diane“Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?!” Mr. Ambrose shrieked, kicking his legs uselessly as the heavy steel handcuffs snapped around his wrists.

The ballroom erupted into sheer pandemonium. Photographers swarmed the base of the stage, their camera shutters firing in a relentless frenzy, capturing every angle of Diane Vance’s absolute public destruction. The high-society illusion she had spent thirty years carefully constructing was dissolving into acidic ash right before her eyes.
Diane looked around the room, her eyes darting frantically from face to face. The very people who had kissed her ring and toasted her success an hour ago were now turning their backs, whispering behind cupped hands, distancing themselves from the sinking ship.
“Emily... please,” Diane whispered, her voice finally cracking, shedding the polished corporate armor to reveal a desperate, cornered animal. She dropped to her knees on the marble floor right at Emily’s feet, grabbing the hem of her emerald-green velvet gown. “I raised you! After your father died, I kept this roof over your head! Have mercy—”
Emily looked down at her stepmother, her expression devoid of pity, anger, or triumph. There was only cold, impenetrable emptiness.
“You traded me like livestock to pay off your gambling debts, Diane,” Emily said quietly, her voice ringing out across the silent hall. “You desecrated my father’s legacy, and you thought you could bury me in the dark. But you forgot one simple rule of business: debts always come due.”
Two federal marshals pushed their way through the paralyzed crowd, badges flashing under the crystal chandeliers. They bypassed Matthew and Arthur, walking straight up to the kneeling woman.
“Diane Vance, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy,” the lead marshal announced crisply, hauling Diane to her feet.
As the steel cuffs locked around her wrists, Diane let out a low, pathetic wail of despair, glaring at Emily with eyes full of pure, unadulterated venom. “You’ll rot for this, Emily! You and your billionaire protector! You’ll never be free!”
They dragged her screaming toward the service elevators, her designer heels clicking awkwardly against the floor as her platinum hair came unpinned, tumbling wildly around her tear-streaked face.
Mr. Ambrose was hauled out right behind her, his expensive tuxedo wrinkled and ruined.

The ballroom doors slammed shut behind them, sealing their fate.
Emily stood frozen under the blazing lights, drawing a long, steady breath. The ghost of her father whispered softly in the back of her mind: Well done, my girl.
