Chapter 12 - The Final SurrenderThe silence in the boardroom was absolute. Harrison’s enforcers looked sideways at their boss, suddenly realizing they were standing on the losing side of a war led by a man who owned half the federal judiciary.

“You... you framed me,” Harrison whispered, trembling with impotent rage. “This is a conspiracy!”

“Conspiracy?” Emily finally spoke, her voice ringing out with crystal-clear authority. She stood up from her chair, walking slowly around the obsidian table until she stood inches away from her uncle. “You abandoned our family when Diane took over. You took her blood money to look the other way while she bled my father’s company dry. And now you walk back in here expecting a handout?”

She pointed her finger toward the heavy oak boardroom doors.

“Get out of my building, Harrison. Before I let Mr. Carter introduce you to the same federal prosecutors currently sharing a prison block with my stepmother.”

Harrison opened his mouth to sputter another threat, but took one look into Matthew’s dark, unblinking eyes and thought better of it. He grabbed his briefcase, stumbled backward, and practically bolted out of the boardroom, his enforcers trailing nervously behind him.

The heavy doors clicked shut.

Arthur Sterling let out a low whistle, clapping his hands softly. “Remind me never to get on your bad side, Mr. Carter.”

Matthew didn't smile. He turned his attention entirely to Emily, his expression softening as he reached out to tuck a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. “Are you alright?”

“I’m more than alright,” Emily whispered, looking up at him with a profound, unshakeable sense of peace settling deep into her soul. “I’m finally home.”
