Chapter 10 - Shadows in the BoardroomThe morning sun cast a brilliant golden glow over the fifty-fifth-floor executive boardroom of Vance Global Tower—now proudly rebranded as Vance-Carter Holdings.

Emily sat at the head of the massive obsidian conference table, wearing a sharp, tailored charcoal pantsuit that projected absolute authority. Piles of corporate restructuring documents, subsidiary audits, and philanthropic foundation charters surrounded her.
Arthur Sterling sat to her right, aggressively stamping approvals with a heavy gold seal, while Matthew observed quietly from the corner leather armchair, playing the role of the silent, immovable guardian.
“The last of Diane’s shell companies in the Cayman Islands has been successfully frozen by federal prosecutors,” Arthur reported, sliding a final audit sheet across the glass. “All liquid assets have been seized and redirected into the newly formed Arthur Vance Memorial Foundation for Orphaned Youths.”
Emily let out a long, contented breath, feeling a profound weight lift off her shoulders. The empire her father had built was finally cleansed of the rot that had nearly destroyed it.
Suddenly, the heavy oak boardroom doors burst open without warning.
A tall, broad-shouldered man with salt-and-pepper hair and cold, calculating eyes stormed into the room, flanked by two burly corporate enforcers. It was Harrison Vance—Emily’s estranged uncle on her father’s side, who had mysteriously vanished to Zurich five years prior when Diane had first seized control of the board.
“What in God’s name is going on here?!” Harrison roared, slamming his leather briefcase onto the conference table. “Have you all lost your minds? Conducting a hostile liquidation of Vance Global without consulting the primary family shareholders?!”
Emily didn't flinch. She slowly leaned back in her leather executive chair, resting her hands flat against the table. “Hello, Uncle Harrison. Nice of you to finally return from your permanent Swiss vacation.”
Harrison sneered, glaring down at her with undisguised contempt. “Don't take that tone with me, little girl! You’re twenty-four years old! You have no business sitting in that chair! Your father was weak, and you’re even weaker!”
Before Emily could deliver a single scathing word in response, the corner of the room went deathly cold.

Matthew Carter stood up from his armchair. He didn't rush. He moved with the slow, terrifying grace of a tiger stepping out of the tall grass. He towered over Harrison by half a head, his dark eyes locked onto the intruder with murderous intensity.
“You might want to check whose signature is on the master deed before you start shouting about family inheritance, Mr. Vance,” Matthew’s voice was a lethal, velvet whisper that made the two corporate enforcers instinctively take a step backward. “Because right now, you are trespassing on Carter property.”
