Chapter 6 - The Tiger in the TrapThe Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel downtown was suffocatingly opulent, radiating the desperate, hollow luxury of a dying corporate dynasty. Crystal chandeliers dripped from the gilded ceiling, casting dazzling reflections over hundreds of high-society elites, politicians, and corporate sycophants sipping champagne.

At the center of the receiving line stood Diane Vance, resplendent in a crimson Versace gown that screamed old money and ruthless ambition. Her platinum-blonde hair was pinned into a flawless French twist, and her diamond-encrusted earrings caught every flicker of light. Beside her stood Mr. Ambrose, sweating profusely in a tight tuxedo, his greedy eyes darting nervously toward the entrance.

“Thank you all so much for coming tonight to celebrate Vance Global’s historic merger,” Diane projected her voice with practiced, saccharine charm into the microphone on the elevated stage. “As my late husband always envisioned, our family is stronger, united, and poised for unprecedented growth.”

Whispers of polite applause rippled through the ballroom. Diane scanned the crowd, a tight, triumphant knot forming in her chest. Everything was falling into place. The fake death certificate for Emily’s compliance, the forged trust signatures filed with the county clerk this morning, and Ambrose’s cash infusion—it was all secured.

Suddenly, the heavy mahogany double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open with a resounding, thunderous crash.

The live orchestra stuttered and died mid-note. Every single head in the room whipped around toward the entrance.

Striding through the doors with unhurried, devastating elegance was Emily Vance.

She wore a backless, emerald-green silk velvet gown that seemed to swallow the light, custom-tailored by Italian artisans and flown in by private courier that afternoon. Her dark hair was styled in sleek, modern waves, and high on her left cheekbone, though artfully covered by high-definition cosmetics, the faint shadow of Diane’s ring lingered like a badge of honor.

Walking right beside her, with his hand resting lightly and possessively at the small of her back, was Matthew Carter.

The room collectively gasped. The media vultures near the press pit scrambled for their cameras, their flashbulbs exploding like a string of continuous firecrackers. Matthew Carter—the reclusive, terrifying multi-billionaire who hadn't attended a public social event in five years—was walking arm-in-arm with the missing Vance heiress.

Diane’s face drained of every single drop of blood. The microphone in her hand emitted a sharp, ear-piercing screech as her manicured fingers convulsed around the metal shaft.

Mr. Ambrose stepped backward, his face turning the color of curdled milk. “That... that’s impossible,” he stammered, grabbing Diane’s arm. “You said she was locked in the room!”
