Chapter 9 - A Foundation of Honor

One year after that dark night in the laundry room, Ethan and I hosted a grand open-air celebration at our Granville estate.
Over one hundred friends, baseball teammates, construction partners, and Marcus Vance’s family gathered under white marquees by the pond to inaugurate the Sarah & Ethan Mercer Foundation for Youth Protection—a ten-million-dollar philanthropic endowment dedicated to providing legal defense, emergency shelter, and educational scholarships for abused teenagers across Ohio.
Standing beside me on the timber veranda was Dr. Claire Sterling—a brilliant, warm-hearted pediatric trauma specialist who had overseen Ethan’s recovery and had become my dearest partner and closest companion.
Claire was gentle, grounded, and possessed a fierce integrity that matched my own. She loved Ethan with a pure, respectful warmth that asked for nothing in return, bringing a radiant, peaceful light back into our home.
"Look at him, David," Claire smiled warmly, handing me a glass of iced tea and resting her hand gently over mine. "He's completely whole."

Across the lawn, seventeen-year-old Ethan was demonstrating proper batting swings to a group of young boys from the youth center, his clear, resonant laughter carrying across the water.
"He got his courage from his mother," I said softly, leaning down to kiss Claire’s cheek. "And his heart belongs to this family."
