Chapter 6 - The Federal Warrant

The front double doors burst open with concussive force.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move!"
Six armed tactical special agents in FBI windbreakers and two uniformed Columbus police captains swarmed into the foyer and living room, weapons drawn.
Leading the team was Special Agent Robert Miller and my attorney, Marcus Vance.
Sheila screamed, dropping her designer purse as stolen pearl necklaces and forged credit cards spilled across the hardwood.
Dylan backed into the corner, weeping hysterically: "I didn't do anything! It was my aunt! She told me I could hit him!"
"Amanda Mercer, Sheila Vance, and Brooke Hayes," Agent Miller announced with booming authority, unrolling a sealed forty-two-count federal grand jury indictment. "You are under arrest for syndicated wire fraud, grand larceny, felony identity theft, insurance fraud, and felony aggravated child abuse."
"No! David! Tell them to stop!" Amanda shrieked, scrambling backward against the sofa as two female federal agents grabbed her arms, forcing her face-down onto the coffee table.
The steel handcuffs clicked shut around Amanda’s wrists with brutal, metallic finality.
"You're a monster, David!" Amanda wept, thrashing against the agents. "You destroyed this family!"
I walked over to where she was pinned, looking down at her with complete, serene disgust.
"You never were a family, Amanda," I said quietly. "You were a parasite. And your time in my home is finished."
Dylan was escorted out in juvenile custody restraints for assault and battery, while Sheila and Brooke were marched to waiting federal transport vans in front of dozens of neighbors who had gathered on the sidewalk with their phones recording the entire spectacle.
As the sirens faded into the autumn afternoon, Ethan stood beside me on the front porch, watching the convoy disappear down the road.
I put my arm around my son’s shoulders, pulling him tight against my side.

"It's over, Ethan," I whispered.
"We won, Dad," Ethan smiled, tears of pure relief washing over his face. "We're finally free."
