Chapter 8 - The Rebuilt Dream

Six months after the trial, the crisp chill of winter gave way to the vibrant, sun-drenched beauty of late spring.

Ethan’s physical wounds had healed completely, and with the help of a dedicated sports psychologist, his confidence soared to heights he had never experienced before.

He was accepted into the prestigious Granville Academy, maintaining a straight-A average and earning the starting position as varsity center fielder on the baseball team.

Every afternoon, when my construction crew finished our regional framing projects, I would drive my truck directly to the high school diamond.

On a warm Saturday in May, the stands were packed for the regional championship game.

Ethan stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning, bases loaded, two outs, the score tied 3-3.

He adjusted his batting helmet, looked up at the bleachers where I was standing, and gave me a confident, knowing nod.

The pitcher threw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball right down the center.

CRACK!

The sound of the solid ash wood striking the baseball echoed across the valley like a rifle shot.

The ball soared high into the azure sky, sailing effortlessly over the center-field fence for a grand slam walk-off victory.

The entire team swarmed the home plate, lifting Ethan onto their shoulders as the crowd erupted into deafening cheers.

When Ethan broke free from the huddle, he sprinted straight to the dugout fence, throwing his arms around my neck with pure, unbridled joy.

"That was for you, Dad!" Ethan beamed, holding up the game ball.

"That was all you, son," I laughed, tears of immense pride stinging my eyes. "You earned every single inch of that run."
