Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Living Room

"David, don't look at my nephew like that," Amanda snapped, stepping forward with practiced, manipulative aggression. "We had a family emergency in Florida, and Ethan volunteered to stay behind and manage the household chores."
"Volunteered?" I asked, setting my mug down on the mantelpiece with a soft, ominous click.
"Yes! He’s sixteen, David! He needs discipline! You baby him too much, and frankly, he’s been acting out while you’ve been away!"
"Is that why you beat him with a belt, Amanda?"
The living room went dead silent.
Sheila’s mouth dropped open. Brooke looked frantically toward the front door.
Amanda’s face flushed crimson. "What lies has that little sociopath been feeding you?! I have never touched him! He probably bruised himself skateboarding to manipulate you!"
"I don't think a skateboard leaves adult thumbprints on both wrists, Amanda," I said, pulling my smartphone from my breast pocket and tapping the screen.
The fifty-five-inch wall monitor in the living room flickered to life.
High-resolution color photographs of Ethan’s bruises, cuts, and the forensic pediatric medical report filled the screen in agonizing detail.
Beneath the photos was the high-definition video of Ethan kneeling beside the blue basin at 11:00 PM, his shivering voice recounting how Amanda withheld food and locked him in the attic on his sixteenth birthday.
Amanda stepped back, her breath catching in her throat. "David... turn that off. That’s private family business!"
"We aren't finished, Amanda," I said.
I clicked the remote again.
The screen shifted to unredacted banking records, probate court filings from Cleveland, and high-resolution scans of the WIDOWS file recovered from her nightstand.
"You stole Sarah’s heirloom silver cup," I said, my voice dropping into an ice-cold register that shook the walls. "You forged five credit cards under my name. And you took out a 2.5-million-dollar accidental death policy on me through a shell broker in Delaware."
Amanda turned ghostly white. Her knees visibly buckled inside her designer dress.

"David... please," Amanda stammered, tears of desperate terror finally breaking through her makeup. "It’s a misunderstanding! Brooke and Sheila handled those accounts! I was doing it to secure our family’s future!"
"Your future is already decided, Amanda," I said.
