The Shadow at the Table / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - Protecting the Innocent"You think your last name and your expensive jewelry give you the right to break a child's spirit?" Vanessa challenged, her voice ringing out clearly across the grand hall. She pulled little Lily closer to her side, wrapping a protective arm around her waist.

"Look at her," Vanessa commanded, gesturing toward Lily. "She is five years old. She has done nothing to deserve your cruelty except exist outside of your narrow, heartless expectations. But those days are over. Finished. Done."

Several of the high-society guests lowered their gazes, visibly uncomfortable with the ugly public exposure of family abuse. A prominent board member sitting near the middle of the table cleared his throat, shifting uneasily in his seat as he looked at Victoria for an explanation she clearly did not have.

Victoria’s hands shook as she gripped the edge of the table, her face twisting in bitter hatred. "She is an ill-bred nuisance," Victoria spat out venomously. "She does not belong among us!"
